A milestone worth marking. Words that still sound like you.
A 50th birthday can call for something more personal than “have a great day”, but the blank space in a card can make even familiar feelings difficult to write. Should it be funny? Sentimental? Is it better to mention the age or leave the number to the candles?
The best choice depends on the person opening the card. A close friend may love a joke about your shared adventures; a parent might treasure a specific thank-you. For someone who prefers a quiet birthday, a few kind words can be exactly right.
Before you choose a message
A simple way to make a birthday wish personal
You do not need to sum up fifty years or write an impressive speech. Aim for something the recipient will recognise as coming from you. These four small decisions are usually enough to turn a general birthday greeting into a message worth keeping.
01
Start as you speak
“Dear Kate”, “To my lovely Mum” or “Happy birthday, mate” can all work. Choose the greeting you would actually use.
02
Add something true
Name a quality, a memory or an everyday kindness: the lifts, the listening, the terrible jokes or the reliable cup of tea.
03
Look ahead gently
Wish them more time for something they enjoy. You do not need to promise that the next decade will be perfect.
04
Sign it properly
Finish with a sign-off that fits your relationship and include every sender’s name, especially in a family or shared card.
For example, “Happy 50th, Kate. I still smile about our rain-soaked weekend in Whitby. Here’s to more trips, better weather and another year of putting the world to rights. Lots of love, Jess.” The place and memory make the message hers; the wording around them stays simple.
If you are choosing personalised gifts as well, let the card explain the thought behind your choice. A line such as “For all the Sunday walks we’ve still got planned” connects a present to your relationship without turning the message into a description of the gift.
01
Keep it simple
Short 50th birthday wishes
A short message works well when the card already has a greeting, when several people are signing, or when a few direct words sound most like you. Choose one wish and add their name. There is no need to fill every inch of the card to make it feel personal.
01
Happy 50th, [Name]! Hope today brings your favourite people, excellent cake and absolutely no washing up.
02
Wishing you a wonderful 50th birthday and a year with plenty to look forward to.
03
Happy 50th! Here’s to more good days, unexpected adventures and time for the things you love.
04
Fifty today and so much to celebrate. Sending you lots of love on your birthday.
05
Have a brilliant 50th, [Name]. Hope you feel thoroughly spoilt from the first cup of tea onwards.
06
Happy birthday! May your fiftieth be full of warm company, good food and a little birthday magic.
07
With love on your 50th. Hope this next year brings something lovely that you haven’t even imagined yet.
08
Happy 50th to someone who makes ordinary days better. Today deserves to be a really good one.
09
Wishing you a very happy 50th and plenty of little reasons to smile in the year ahead.
10
A big birthday, a big hug and all our love. Happy 50th, [Name]!
Make it yours: swap “the things you love” for something real, such as coastal walks, garden afternoons or Sunday lunches with the family.
02
A little birthday mischief
Funny 50th birthday messages
Funny 50th birthday messages land best when they reflect a joke you already share. Cake, group chats and ambitious weekend plans offer gentler material than appearance or health. If you would not say the line to them in person, choose another one for their card.
11
Happy 50th! I was going to organise a wild night out, but I know how much you value a good parking space.
12
Fifty candles felt a bit excessive, so we’ve invested heavily in cake instead. You’re welcome.
13
Happy 50th! You can now describe any questionable decision as “something I’ve always wanted to try”. Very useful.
14
Congratulations on turning 50. Your birthday plans have officially earned the right to include an early finish.
15
Happy birthday! Fifty years of practice and you still can’t let someone load the dishwasher differently.
16
You’re 50 today, which means the birthday speech can include “back in my day” without anyone stopping you.
17
Happy 50th! We’ve checked the rules: a second slice of cake counts as celebrating, not overdoing it.
18
Fifty looks good on you. Much better than that outfit we have agreed never to discuss again.
19
Happy 50th to the person who can turn a quick catch-up into a three-hour discussion about where to eat.
20
For your 50th, I considered a sensible present. Then I remembered who I was buying for. Enjoy!
Keep the joke affectionate. Avoid jokes about being “past it”, memory loss, weight or illness unless you know the recipient genuinely enjoys that kind of humour.
03
Say the lovely thing
Heartfelt 50th birthday messages
For a meaningful milestone message, describe the effect this person has on your life. A quality you admire, a thank-you you have never quite said, or one familiar memory will usually feel warmer than a grand statement about fifty years. These wishes leave room for that personal detail.
21
Happy 50th. You have a way of making people feel welcome, remembered and important. I hope today gives some of that kindness back to you.
22
On your 50th, I hope you know how much your friendship has meant through all the ordinary days as well as the big ones.
23
Wishing you a beautiful birthday. Your patience, humour and generous heart have made more difference than you probably realise.
24
Happy 50th, [Name]. One of my favourite things about life is that you are part of it. Thank you for being you.
25
Today is a lovely excuse to tell you something that is true all year: you are deeply loved, and your company is a gift.
26
Happy 50th. May the coming years give you more space for your own wishes, more time with your people and many happy surprises.
27
Your birthday brings back so many good memories. Thank you for your part in them, and here’s to the moments we haven’t made yet.
28
With love on your 50th. You don’t need a big achievement or a perfect plan to deserve a wonderful day. You already do.
29
Happy birthday to someone whose quiet thoughtfulness never goes unnoticed. I hope your fiftieth feels as warm and generous as you are.
30
Fifty years of your story, and still so many pages to write. Wishing you joy in the next ones, at your own pace.
Add one sentence beginning “I still remember…” or “You always…”. A specific moment gives even a short birthday wish a voice that belongs to you.
04
For your favourite person to call
50th birthday wishes for a friend
A message for a friend can be playful, grateful or wonderfully unpolished. Think about how you actually talk together. A reference to your regular coffee, a disastrous holiday or a small act of support will do more than a polished line that could have been written for anyone.
31
Happy 50th, my lovely friend. Thank you for the long conversations, the honest advice and the messages that arrive exactly when I need them.
32
Fifty today! We’ve collected a few stories between us, and I’m looking forward to giving ourselves plenty more to laugh about.
33
Happy birthday to the friend who knows when to offer advice and when to put the kettle on. I’m so glad we found each other.
34
Happy 50th, [Name]. I hope this year includes the trip we keep talking about and fewer reasons to say “we must do this more often”.
35
To my best friend on your 50th: you make the good times louder and the difficult times less lonely. Thank you for both.
36
Happy birthday! You’re still my first choice for a catch-up that starts with “just an hour” and ends somewhere after dinner.
37
Fifty looks like a good excuse to celebrate a friendship I never take for granted. So much love to you today.
38
Happy 50th to a friend who has seen several versions of me and somehow stayed. I hope you know how much that means.
39
We may not see each other as often as we’d like, but you are always one of my people. Have a wonderful 50th.
40
Happy 50th, [Name]. Here’s to old jokes, new plans and the lovely comfort of a friendship that doesn’t need explaining.
For a newer friendship, focus on what you enjoy now. You do not need a shared childhood to write a warm and thoughtful message.
05
A thank-you she can keep
50th birthday wishes for Mum
For Mum’s 50th, try to celebrate her as a person as well as a parent. Thank her for something specific, then wish her more of what she enjoys. If the card is from several children, use “we” and include everyone’s names so the message feels complete.
41
Happy 50th, Mum. Thank you for the calls, the lifts, the listening and the thousand little things that have always made me feel loved.
42
To a wonderful Mum on your 50th: I hope today includes your favourite food, your favourite people and time to enjoy it all.
43
Happy birthday, Mum. You’ve put so much care into our family. Here’s to a year with more room for the things you want to do.
44
Happy 50th! I’m grateful for the mum you are and the funny, thoughtful person I get to know more with every year.
45
Mum, your 50th is a lovely chance to say thank you for making home feel like somewhere I can always belong.
46
With all our love on your 50th, Mum. We hope you feel as celebrated today as you have always made us feel.
47
Happy 50th to my brilliant Mum. Your advice has helped more than I admitted at the time. There, I’ve finally put it in writing.
48
Mum, I hope this birthday brings a proper pause, a little spoiling and a very large reminder of how much you mean to us.
49
Happy 50th. Some of my happiest memories are the small things we did together. Thank you for giving me so many to keep.
50
For your 50th, Mum, I wish you good company, new experiences and plenty of days that feel entirely your own. Love you always.
Use the name that sounds natural in your family: Mum, Mam, Mummy, a step-parent’s name or another familiar nickname.
A small keepsake idea
Some birthday words deserve a place on the shelf.
If you would like your message to last beyond the party, a wooden birthday card offers a different way to give it. This birch design has an engraved greeting, your message and signature, a layered star badge and a matching display stand.
The age and dedication are personalised, so the wording can suit Mum, Dad, a friend or a partner. Keep the engraved message concise; save a longer letter for a separate note.
A short message to adapt
Happy 50th, Mum. For the listening, the laughter and all the love. Always grateful. Always love you. Ellie & Ben

Warm words, with room for a joke
50th birthday wishes for Dad
A card for Dad can acknowledge the practical things, the shared interests and the support that is sometimes easier to notice than to put into words. You can keep it warm without making it formal. A familiar phrase or a gentle family joke often gives the message its finishing touch.
51
Happy 50th, Dad. Thank you for showing up, helping out and making so many things feel manageable. It means more than you know.
52
To a brilliant Dad on your 50th: hope your day contains good food, your favourite people and full control of the remote.
53
Happy birthday, Dad. Some of my favourite memories are just the two of us doing ordinary things. Here’s to plenty more.
54
Happy 50th! Thank you for your patience, your practical advice and your impressive confidence that every journey has a better route.
55
Dad, you have given our family so much time and care. I hope your 50th feels like a big thank-you from all of us.
56
With love on your 50th, Dad. May the year ahead bring a few good adventures and lots of time for the hobbies you love.
57
Happy 50th to the man who taught me plenty, including how to laugh when the plan doesn’t quite work. Love you, Dad.
58
Dad, I don’t say it often enough, but I’m really grateful for you. Wishing you a birthday that feels properly special.
59
Happy birthday! Fifty years, countless cups of tea and still a new project on the go. Hope this one starts with a day off.
60
Happy 50th, Dad. Thank you for being in my corner through the little decisions and the big ones. I’m lucky to have you.
Choose a memory he will recognise: a school run conversation, a match you watched or a project you worked on together. One detail is enough.
07
For the life you share
50th birthday wishes for a husband, wife or partner
A partner’s birthday card is a chance to say something beyond the daily messages about shopping and appointments. You might thank them for the life you share, name something you still love about them, or mention a plan you are looking forward to. Use husband, wife, partner or simply their name as it suits you.
61
Happy 50th, my love. Of all the people I could share ordinary Tuesdays with, I’m so glad it’s you.
62
To my wonderful husband on your 50th: thank you for the laughter, the kindness and the life we keep building together.
63
Happy 50th to my lovely wife. I love the person you are today and look forward to all the things we still have to discover.
64
Happy birthday, [Name]. Through busy weeks and changing plans, being on your team is still my favourite place to be.
65
Fifty today, and there is still no one I would rather make plans with, get lost with or come home to. All my love.
66
Happy 50th to the person who knows my stories and still asks about my day. Thank you for all the ways you love me.
67
On your 50th, I hope you feel how much you are wanted, appreciated and loved. You bring so much to our life together.
68
Happy birthday, my love. Here’s to that little trip, the big idea and all the quiet evenings in between. I want them with you.
69
Happy 50th. We’ve changed, learnt and found our way through plenty. I’m grateful that we get to keep choosing each other.
70
To you on your 50th: the best part of our story has never been the grand occasions. It’s having you beside me every day.
If “forever” or “soulmate” does not sound like you, leave it out. A small, recognisable truth can be more romantic than a sweeping declaration.
08
Friendly, thoughtful, work-appropriate
50th birthday messages for a colleague or boss
For a colleague, keep the message warm and proportionate to how well you know them. Mention their kindness, good humour or contribution to the team. A boss’s card can still sound human; it does not need to read like a performance review. Avoid retirement jokes or assumptions about their next career plans.
71
Happy 50th, [Name]! Wishing you a lovely day and a birthday weekend with absolutely no need to check your inbox.
72
Wishing you a very happy 50th. It’s a pleasure working with you, and we hope you have a wonderful celebration.
73
Happy birthday! Thank you for the good humour and calm advice you bring to the team. Hope your 50th is a brilliant one.
74
Happy 50th from all of us. We hope the year ahead brings plenty to enjoy, both at work and beyond it.
75
With warm wishes on your 50th, [Name]. Hope you get time to celebrate in exactly the way you like.
76
Happy 50th to a colleague who makes a busy day feel a little easier. Have a well-deserved, thoroughly enjoyable celebration.
77
Wishing you a fantastic 50th birthday. Thank you for your encouragement and for always making time to help.
78
Happy birthday from the whole team! We’ve managed to agree on one thing today: you deserve a very good slice of cake.
79
Happy 50th, [Name]. Here’s to a happy year, a few exciting plans and a proper break from the usual routine today.
80
With best wishes for your 50th birthday. We’re delighted to celebrate with you and hope it’s a day to remember.
For a shared card, agree who will write the main greeting and leave space for individual signatures. Keep private nicknames and personal stories out of a card that will circulate.
09
Follow their lead
Low-key wishes when they don’t want a fuss
Not everyone wants to celebrate turning 50 loudly. Some people dislike age jokes; others have a difficult year behind them or simply prefer a quiet day. You can acknowledge their birthday without making the number the focus. A gentle wish should offer warmth without telling them how they ought to feel.
81
Happy birthday, [Name]. Hope today brings a few lovely moments and the kind of company you enjoy most.
82
Sending you lots of love on your birthday. No grand speech, just a little reminder that you matter to me.
83
Wishing you a peaceful birthday and a year with more ease, good company and things to look forward to.
84
Happy birthday. Whether your plans are big, small or simply a quiet evening, I hope they feel right for you.
85
Thinking of you on your birthday and sending a big hug. There is no particular way this day has to look.
86
With love for your 50th. You don’t need to make a fuss of the day for us to make a little fuss of you.
87
Happy birthday, [Name]. I hope the coming year brings moments of comfort, genuine laughter and people who understand you.
88
Wishing you a gentle, happy birthday. I’m glad you’re in my life, today and on all the less noticeable days too.
89
A small card with a lot of love inside. Hope your birthday includes something that feels like a treat.
90
Happy 50th. No pressure for a big celebration or a new plan. Just warm wishes for a day that feels like yours.
If they are grieving or under strain, avoid promises that “this will be your best year yet”. Acknowledging them with care is enough.
10
Late card, sincere wishes
Belated 50th birthday wishes
If you missed the day, acknowledge it briefly and move on to the birthday wish. A long explanation can make the card more about your diary than their celebration. If the card arrived late but you remembered on the day, simply say that the paper wishes are catching up with the first ones.
91
A little late, but with just as much love: happy 50th, [Name]. I hope your birthday was full of good things.
92
I’m sorry I missed the day. Wishing you a very happy 50th and a lovely year ahead.
93
Your birthday may be over, but celebrating you is still a good idea. Sending belated 50th birthday wishes and a big hug.
94
Happy belated 50th! I hope the celebrations were wonderful and that the cake lasted longer than my sense of timing.
95
The calendar got ahead of me, but I didn’t want to miss the chance to wish you a brilliant year. Happy 50th.
96
My card is late; the affection is very much on time. Hope your 50th brought plenty of reasons to smile.
97
Sending the birthday wishes I should have sent sooner. You deserve a lovely celebration, [Name], and I hope you had one.
98
Happy 50th, a few days later than planned. Here’s to extending the birthday feeling and making time for a catch-up soon.
99
Sorry this card is arriving after the candles have gone out. The wish inside is still the same: a wonderful year for you.
100
My first wishes travelled by message; these ones took the scenic route. With lots of love for your 50th birthday.
Only promise a meal, visit or catch-up if you intend to arrange it. A sincere birthday wish does not need an extra promise to make up for being late.
Put it all together
Five complete 50th birthday card examples
Sometimes a finished card is more useful than another opening line. These examples show how a greeting, a personal thought and a sign-off fit together. Change the names and details rather than copying a memory that does not belong to you.
For a close friend
Warm, with a familiar joke
Dear Rachel,
Happy 50th! Thank you for being the person I can ring with good news, bad news or an extremely unimportant question about dinner. I’m so grateful for all our conversations and the way we always pick up where we left off.
Here’s to more weekends away, more long lunches and finally booking that trip we keep discussing.
Lots of love, Anna xx
For Mum
A proper thank-you
To our wonderful Mum,
Happy 50th birthday. Thank you for all the ways you look after us, especially the little things that are easy to take for granted. You have made our family feel loved through busy weeks and difficult days alike.
We hope today brings a chance to sit back, enjoy your favourite cake and let everyone else do the running around.
All our love, Ellie and Ben
For a partner
Romantic without a grand speech
My lovely Sam,
Happy 50th. I love our big plans, but I also love the quiet life between them: our evening walks, the kitchen conversations and knowing you’ll be there at the end of a busy day.
I hope this year brings you a little more time for yourself and some adventures we can share. I’m very glad I get to do life with you.
All my love, Alex
For a sister or brother
A shared history, lightly told
Dear Jamie,
Happy 50th to the person who remembers all my worst haircuts and has kindly kept most of the evidence to themselves. We’ve shared a lot over the years, and I’m grateful that we can still make each other laugh.
Hope today means good food, people you love and a complete break from being the sensible one.
Lots of love, Chris
From the whole team
Friendly and easy to sign
To Priya,
Wishing you a very happy 50th birthday from all of us. Thank you for your kindness, good humour and the calm way you help everyone through a busy week.
We hope you have a wonderful celebration and a year with plenty to enjoy outside the office too.
With warm wishes, The team
If you’re giving birthday money
Give the cash a little context
A money gift feels warmer when the card explains what you hope it will help them enjoy. Try “A little something towards the weekend away you’ve been planning” or “For a lovely meal, a new book or whatever takes your fancy.” Keep the choice theirs.
A wooden money holder can make the presentation part of the fun. This design is personalised with a name and age, with twine and miniature pegs for your own banknotes or paper vouchers. The stand is included; cash and vouchers are not.
There is no rule that a 50th birthday requires a £50 gift. Choose an amount that suits your budget. For more ways to present it, browse these money gifts ideas.
The example shows Claire’s 40th; the name and age are personalised. Banknotes shown for styling.
The finishing touches
What to leave out of a 50th birthday card
A good birthday message does not need to be long, clever or relentlessly positive. It needs to feel comfortable for the person receiving it. Before you close the envelope, give the wording one quiet read and check these five things.
Age jokes they would not enjoy. “Over the hill” might suit one friend and genuinely upset another. Their sense of humour matters more than the number on the card.
Assumptions about their life. Turning 50 does not mean someone has children, a partner, a settled career or plans to retire. Celebrate the life you know they have.
Private stories in a public card. A party card or office collection may be read aloud. Keep anything intimate, embarrassing or confidential for a separate note.
Pressure to make a fresh start. “Now’s the time to change everything” can sound like criticism. Wish them happiness without assigning a new project.
So many borrowed lines that your voice disappears. Choose one main message, add a real detail and stop when the thought feels complete.
How long should the message be?
For a shared card, one or two sentences and your name are usually enough. For a close friend, parent or partner, a short paragraph gives you space for a memory or thank-you. A longer private letter can sit inside the card if you have more to say; the front greeting does not need to carry it all.
For an engraved message, check the product’s personalisation guidance before copying a full paragraph. Names, punctuation and the final sign-off all need to fit the available space. The ordering guide covers the details worth checking before a keepsake is made.
How should you sign off?
“Lots of love”, “All my love” and “Love from us all” suit close relationships. “With warm wishes” or “Best wishes” works well for a colleague, neighbour or someone you know less closely. A nickname or an “xx” is lovely if it is already part of how you communicate; there is no need to add one to sound warmer.
If the whole family is signing, check that every name appears. If the message is from children, let their own short words have space too. A small drawing or a slightly wonky signature can mean more than another carefully polished sentence.
A little help with the wording
50th birthday card questions, answered
What is a good message for a 50th birthday card?
A good message combines a birthday wish with one detail about the recipient. For example: “Happy 50th, [Name]. Thank you for the laughter and the way you always make time for a proper catch-up. Wishing you a lovely day and a year full of good things.”
What can I write instead of “Happy 50th”?
Try “With love on your birthday”, “Wishing you a wonderful day” or “Here’s to a lovely year ahead”. You can acknowledge the occasion without repeating the age, particularly when the card already has a large 50 on the front.
How do I make a 50th birthday wish personal?
Add a specific memory, an everyday detail or something you appreciate about them. “Thanks for always answering my Sunday evening calls” feels more individual than a general compliment. Use a detail you genuinely share, and keep it appropriate for anyone else who may read the card.
Is it rude to joke about someone turning 50?
It depends on the recipient and your relationship. A shared joke about cake or a familiar habit is usually gentler than a joke about ageing, appearance or health. If they seem uncomfortable with the milestone, keep the message warm and let them decide whether to joke about it.
What should I write to my best friend on her or his 50th?
Thank your friend for something their friendship brings to your life, then add a wish or plan you can share. You might write: “Happy 50th to my favourite person to put the world to rights with. Thank you for the honest advice and all the laughter. Here’s to more long lunches together.”
What should I write in Mum’s or Dad’s 50th birthday card?
Choose a specific thank-you and a wish for them as a person. Mention their support, a memory or something you admire, then wish them time for the things they enjoy. “Thank you for always being in my corner” is a warm starting point when a big emotional message feels difficult.
What do I write for someone I don’t know very well?
Keep it simple and friendly: “Wishing you a very happy 50th birthday and a wonderful celebration.” You can add “It’s lovely to celebrate with you” if you are attending a party. Avoid suggesting a closeness or shared history that is not there.
Should a 50th birthday card mention retirement?
Only if retirement is genuinely part of their plans and they are happy discussing it. A fiftieth birthday is not itself a retirement occasion. For a separate farewell at work, these leaving card messages cover that situation more directly.
What do I write if their birthday falls during a difficult year?
Offer warmth without insisting they feel cheerful. “Thinking of you on your birthday and sending lots of love. I hope today brings a few gentle, lovely moments” leaves room for mixed feelings. Avoid “best year ever” promises or using the card to explain how they should move forward.
Can I use one of these wishes on a wooden card?
Yes, provided the wording fits the chosen design’s personalisation options. Pick a concise message and check the age, dedication, spelling and sender names. Longer examples may need shortening. Read the product guidance or ask about the layout before ordering rather than assuming a whole letter will fit.
