Wooden Wall Letters: How to Choose the Right Size, Font & Layout
Choose wooden lettering for your home, business or wedding. Compare family signs, custom words and nursery letters, with practical advice on size, fonts and layout.

A family name
Your everyday words
Their own little space
The right words deserve the right amount of wall.
A family name above the sofa. A familiar goodbye over the hallway door. A business name behind reception, or a favourite phrase on a wedding backdrop. Wooden wall letters can give each space its own identity, but the finished result depends on more than choosing a name and a colour.
This guide explains how to choose the width, compare fonts and plan the layout, using three Creative Mama designs: a family name sign, custom wooden words and cut-out nursery letters. It also shows how custom lettering can work for a salon, studio or wedding. Start with the space, then work towards the lettering that belongs there.
Measure the space, then choose the words.
Measure the usable width and height where the lettering will sit. Include the things around it: a door frame, the top of a bookcase, a lampshade or the edge of a picture arrangement. A sign needs a little clear wall around it to remain easy to read.
For a phrase above an interior door, check the gap between the frame and ceiling. Above a sofa or chest of drawers, look at the relationship between the lettering and the furniture beneath it. The available wall width is only one part of the decision; the view from the doorway matters too.
Make a paper template or mark a loose rectangle with wall-safe tape, checking the surface first. Step back to the place where you will usually see the sign. If it feels squeezed into the gap, try a shorter phrase or a different position before increasing the size.
One name.
Three overall widths.
The bars compare the available widths of our nursery lettering. Each measurement is for the entire name.
Width comparison only. Finished height depends on the name and font.
A selected width applies to the complete design, including its spaces. For a phrase with several words, confirm the line arrangement and how the width will be measured before ordering.
Why two names at the same width can look different
A short name and a long name both ordered at 30 cm have the same overall width, but the letters will not necessarily have the same height. The longer name has more characters to fit into that space. The chosen script also changes the proportions through tall capitals, loops and letters that extend below the baseline.
This is especially useful to check when ordering for siblings. Matching widths can create a neat overall arrangement; matching the visual height of the lettering may need different widths. Send both names and your available space if you want help balancing them.
Find the lettering that fits your idea.
These shaped wooden letters have no backing plaque, so the wall remains part of the design. Each design is made with your wording, but the size menus differ. Use the comparison below to start with the right product.
| Design | Total widths | A useful starting point for |
|---|---|---|
| Family name sign | 30, 50 or 80 cm | A surname or complete family wording. |
| Custom wooden words | 20, 30, 45, 60, 80 or 92 cm | A phrase, room name, business name or wedding wording. |
| Nursery name letters | 20, 30 or 50 cm | A child's name or a short word. |

Family lettering, with room for the whole name.
A surname sign works beautifully as the centre of a family photo wall, above a console or on a clear living room wall. Our family name signs are available at 30, 50 and 80 cm total width, with four script styles and a choice of painted or natural wood finishes.
Decide on the complete wording first. If you want “The” included, type it with the surname; it is not added automatically. Check capitals, spaces and punctuation as carefully as the spelling.
For a gift, confirm the recipient's preferred wording. A surname on its own, a family nickname and two first names give quite different results. If you are unsure which form they use, ask rather than choosing it for them.
The width is for the complete wording, including spaces. XL signs and some long designs are supplied in sections because the maximum single cutting length is approximately 50 cm.

A short phrase can change the feeling of a room.
“Love You, Bye”, “Our Happy Place” or “One More Chapter” can give a particular corner a purpose. Our wooden words let you choose your own text, one of four fonts, a finish and an available width from 20 to 92 cm.
Above a door, a compact phrase often reads more comfortably than a long quotation. In a reading corner, the words can sit alongside a shelf or chair. Start with something you would actually say, then check how it looks from across the room.
For several words, two lines or a precise gap above furniture, send the exact text and both available measurements before ordering. Ask how the chosen width applies to the proposed arrangement, and whether the design will arrive in sections.
Height is not fixed by the width menu. A longer phrase or a different font can change the proportions considerably. A preview is useful when the space has a strict height limit.

Choose the name first. Let the room follow.
Cut-out nursery letters suit a child's name, a reading corner or a short word such as “Playroom”. This design comes in 20, 30 and 50 cm total widths, with four script styles and 18 finishes.
The listed approximate height guides are around 6, 10 and 15 cm respectively. Those are examples, not guaranteed heights for every name: spelling, length and font all affect the finished shape.
For a quieter nursery, repeat a colour already present in the room, such as sage, beige or a soft pastel. For an older child's room, a favourite colour can give the lettering a place among books, bedding and toys without needing to match every detail.
Order each child's name separately and check the font guide for this specific listing. Mount decorative lettering securely out of children's reach; it is not a toy.
Lettering for a business or a wedding.
The same custom words design can take on a different role in a reception area, creative studio or celebration. Choose the wording for the occasion, then plan the size around the wall or backdrop where it will be displayed.

A business name that belongs in the room.
A clear name behind reception helps give an interior a focal point. Wooden lettering can suit a beauty salon, treatment room, photography studio or creative workspace, especially when the finish repeats a colour already used in the room.
Our custom words product can be used for business signs with your chosen text. Start with the name customers recognise, then check how it reads from the entrance as well as from the chair or desk in front of it. A long tagline may work better elsewhere if it makes the main name too small.
Measure the clear wall above the counter, including the space occupied by lights, shelving and mirrors. The position should look balanced when the desk is in everyday use, with appointment cards, products and a computer in place.
For a consistent brand look, send your wording and the font you are considering before ordering. If you need an exact logo, a particular typeface or unusual characters, share the artwork first so the design can be checked. The standard four-font menu does not automatically reproduce a brand logo.
Include the business name, product, preferred font, finish, total width and maximum height. A photograph of the intended wall can help explain the placement; written measurements are still needed for the fit.

Wedding words with a little breathing room.
A short phrase can bring an indoor ceremony backdrop, sweetheart-table wall or photo corner together. “Better Together”, two first names or a shared surname are possible starting points. Choose wording that feels like the couple, then check its spelling and punctuation together.
Our custom lettering can also become wedding signs. The gold example here uses the same made-to-order product as the hallway and business lettering, with a different phrase, colour and setting.
Think about the view in photographs. Position the words so flowers, chairs or the people standing in front of the backdrop do not hide the main part of the phrase. The sign should remain readable from the area where guests or the photographer will see it.
For a two-line arrangement, confirm the line break, alignment, total width and finished height before production. Also check how larger wording will be supplied in sections, so the venue team knows what needs arranging.
These letters are indoor decor. Confirm the proposed backing and attachment method with your venue; included sticky pads are intended for suitable smooth surfaces. A fabric drape, flower wall or freestanding frame needs its own agreed installation plan.
Send the event date, delivery postcode, exact wording and layout requirements before ordering. Allow time for any requested preview or approval, making, delivery and setting up the display. Check the current options rather than relying on a dispatch estimate as an arrival date.
Compare fonts with your own wording.
A script that looks lovely in one example name may feel different with your surname or phrase. Look at the capital letters, the joins between letters and the height of any loops. If the wording contains an apostrophe or unusual character, include it in your preview request.
Font numbers belong to the individual product listing. Do not assume Font 2 in the custom words guide is identical to Font 2 in the nursery guide. Open the chart on the product you plan to order and use that chart when selecting your style.
For a helpful preview request, send the exact wording, product, font number and intended width together. Add the maximum available height if the lettering needs to fit between a door frame and ceiling or inside a particular wall arrangement.

Choose contrast as well as colour.
Black lettering on a light wall creates a clear outline. Natural birch can soften a neutral room, while a painted name can pick up a colour from a cushion, picture or bedspread. White lettering needs enough contrast with the wall to remain easy to read.
Check the finish chart on the product page rather than relying on a room photograph alone. Daylight, warm lamps and screen settings can all change how a colour appears. Unpainted means natural wood with visible grain; painted metallic finishes such as Gold and Silver are finishes on wood.
Plan the arrangement before attaching anything.
Let the wording flow.
A single line works well for a first name or a compact phrase. Centre the complete arrangement against the wall space or furniture below, then check it from the doorway.
Balance the whole arrangement.
Decide where the phrase breaks and how the lines align. Allow room for tall capitals and letters that extend below the line. Confirm both the overall width and height before production.
When the lettering arrives
Unpack it on a clear, flat surface and support fine strokes and joins as you lift each section. Lay out the words in order, compare them with your planned arrangement and check the spelling before mounting.
Sticky pads are included with all three featured designs. Use them on a suitable clean, dry, smooth indoor surface, following the supplied instructions. Check that the surface and paint finish are appropriate; textured walls, delicate wallpaper and freshly painted finishes may need particular care. Adhesive removal is not guaranteed to be damage-free.
Position decorative lettering where it can be mounted securely and kept out of children's reach. Keep the birch plywood dry. If you are unsure about a surface or a specific installation, ask before attaching the sign.
Five details worth checking together.
- The wording. Every name, word, space, capital and punctuation mark.
- The product. Family sign, custom words or nursery letters, with its own size menu.
- The measurements. Total width, available height and any agreed line arrangement.
- The finish and font. Selected from the guide for that exact listing.
- The display. Surface suitability, included pads and any sections to arrange.
If the sign is needed for a particular date, check the current production and delivery information before ordering. Dispatch time and delivery time are separate; a preview or design approval can also affect when production begins.
Wooden wall letters: your questions.
Does the size refer to each letter or the complete name?
On all three featured designs, it refers to the total width of the complete name or wording. Individual letter heights vary with the text and font. Confirm the arrangement for phrases with several words or lines.
Will two names ordered at 30 cm have the same height?
Not necessarily. Different name lengths and letter shapes produce different proportions at the same total width. Ask for advice using both names if matching the visual height is important.
Can a long phrase be arranged over two lines?
A particular line arrangement needs checking before ordering. Send the full phrase, preferred line break, maximum width and available height so the layout and measurement can be confirmed.
Will a large wooden sign arrive in one piece?
It depends on the design and wording. The family sign's maximum single cutting length is approximately 50 cm, so XL and some long designs arrive in sections. Confirm how any larger custom phrase will be supplied before ordering.
Can I request a font preview?
Yes, previews are available on request. Provide your exact text, the product, font number and intended width. Include any height restriction or special layout that needs checking.
Are sticky pads included?
Yes, all three featured designs include sticky pads. Check that your indoor surface is suitable, plan the arrangement first and follow the mounting instructions supplied with the lettering.
Which design is best for a child's name?
The nursery lettering is a useful starting point for a name or short word, with 20, 30 and 50 cm widths. For a longer phrase or different size range, compare the custom words listing and ask about the layout.
Can I order lettering for my business?
Yes. The custom words product can be made with a business name or short phrase using the available font, finish and width options. Send any exact logo, special typeface or complex layout before ordering so suitability can be checked.
Can wooden letters be used on a wedding backdrop?
They can be used for a suitable indoor display. Confirm the size, line arrangement and attachment method before ordering, especially for fabric or freestanding backdrops. Check setup requirements with your venue and allow time for making and delivery.
Can these letters be displayed outside?
The featured designs are intended for indoor decorative use. Keep the plywood dry and away from direct moisture. Ask about suitability before planning an outdoor or damp-location display.
