Baby Announcement Ideas: Wording, Photos & Wooden Plaques
From pregnancy news to your newborn’s first introduction: find natural wording, simple photo ideas and a wooden announcement plaque that suits your family. A practical guide from Creative Mama’s Hull workshop.

In this guide
A baby announcement can be the message that says you're expecting, the photograph that introduces your newborn, or the moment you finally share their name. You don't need all three to look the same. A due-date sign suits pregnancy news; a personalised name plaque gives a first photograph one clear detail for everyone to read.
At Creative Mama, we make wooden baby announcement plaques in our family workshop in Hull. This guide brings together wording you can adapt, simple photo ideas and the differences between our designs, so you can choose something that fits your news.
If you're introducing your newborn, our personalised baby announcement plaque in a wooden balloon shape is a good place to start. The first name is raised and painted, with any additional names engraved below. You'll find photographs and sizing details further down.
Baby announcement wording that sounds like you
Start with the piece of news you actually want to share. For a pregnancy announcement, that might be a due month and your family name. For a birth announcement, it might simply be your baby's first name. Birth weight, time and hospital details are optional; there is no need to publish them to make the message feel complete.
A short caption usually leaves more room for the photograph. These examples are starting points, so swap in your own names, dates and tone.
“A little news we've been waiting to share. Baby Parker, due April.”
“She's here. Meet Amelia — we're taking a little time to settle in together.”
“Hello world, my name is Oakley.”
“One more person to love. We're welcoming a new little member of the family.”
If your caption is already doing the talking, keep the sign simple. A personalised baby name sign with just the name can work beautifully. If you prefer the photograph to announce the news on its own, “Hello World” or “Welcome to the World” gives it a little context.
Which baby announcement plaque suits your photograph?
Think about what should catch the eye first: the name, a little illustration or the shape of the plaque. Raised lettering creates a more prominent name; engraving keeps the wording close to the natural wood. A photo with a patterned blanket may need a simpler sign than one with a plain background.
A balloon shape with a raised first name
Our wooden baby announcement sign in a balloon shape combines a hand-painted first name, engraved additional names and a satin ribbon. The little teddy detail sits beneath the introductory wording, so the name remains the main feature.
The balloon is made from 3 mm birch plywood. Small measures approximately 12 × 14 cm, Large 15 × 20 cm and XL 21 × 27 cm, excluding the loose ribbon. Small takes up less of the frame; Large or XL gives the sign more presence. For a long name, ask us to check the lettering layout before choosing.
A round name sign or a little teddy
Both designs come in approximately 12 × 12, 17 × 17 and 20 × 20 cm sizes, with Pastel Blue, Pastel Pink, White, Beige or Grey lettering options. If you prefer an engraved name to raised lettering, take a look at the engraved Hello World balloon plaque instead. Check the individual product page for its size choices.
Pregnancy announcement ideas for family and friends
Before you have a name to share, a due date or a short message can do the job. You might give grandparents a sign to unwrap, photograph it beside the scan, or send a close-up to the people you'd like to tell first.
There are two different ways to include a scan. The peg sign above displays a paper photograph. Our personalised engraved baby scan plaque reproduces the scan in the wood itself; it does not hold a loose photo. Choose the first if you want to display a print, or the engraved design if you want the scan to become part of the keepsake.
Let an older sibling share the news
A photograph with an I'm Going To Be a Big Brother plaque or Big Sister announcement sign lets an older child have their own part in the reveal. Ask whether they'd like to be in the picture and keep it relaxed; a candid smile often says more than a carefully rehearsed pose.
The announcement is only one part of preparing for a new sibling. NCT's guidance on sibling relationships offers ideas for talking about the change and making time for your older child.
Simple baby announcement photo ideas
You can take a lovely announcement photo with a phone and a quiet corner near a window. Soft daylight makes the wood grain and painted lettering easier to see. Switch off harsh overhead lighting, clear the background and take a test photograph before adding the sign.
- A close-up of the name: photograph the plaque on its own, then pair it with a separate newborn picture in your announcement. This is useful if you want to share the name without posting your baby's face.
- A parent-held portrait: have one adult hold the baby comfortably while another holds the plaque alongside them, keeping the sign and ribbon away from the baby's face and hands.
- A pregnancy flat lay: arrange your scan print, a small pair of booties and a due-date sign on a plain surface. Crop any personal information from the scan before sharing.
- A family reveal: include a sibling or grandparents in the photograph, with the announcement sign held where the wording can be read.
Wooden plaques and ribbons are decorative photo props, not toys. Use them with adult supervision, keep them out of children's reach and remove them from the baby's sleep space. For sleep arrangements, follow The Lullaby Trust's clear-cot guidance.
Before uploading the picture, decide how widely you want it shared and which details to keep private. The UK Safer Internet Centre's guide to sharing children's photos is a useful read if you're thinking about your baby's online footprint.
The small details to check before you order
We make our personalised plaques to order, so the details you enter matter. Check spelling, capitals and the order of the names, especially if you're including middle names or a surname. If you haven't settled on a name, a pregnancy message or family surname can be a better fit for the announcement you're planning now.
For the personalised balloon baby name announcement sign, the first name is raised and painted; additional names and the surname are engraved as standard. If you want two first names raised, write “both first names in 3D” with your personalisation. You can request “Welcome to the World”, different wording or no introductory message, and a design preview is available on request.
Choose the painted name colour separately from the Pink or Blue ribbon. White or Beige lettering can suit a neutral photograph; you don't have to match the ribbon to the name colour. Each piece has its own wood grain, and screen settings can make paint colours look slightly different.

Baby announcement questions
What is a baby announcement plaque?
A baby announcement plaque is a decorative sign used to share pregnancy news, introduce a newborn or reveal a baby's name. A personalised wooden plaque can include names, a due date or introductory wording, depending on the design, and can be kept after the photograph is shared.
Is a baby announcement the same as a pregnancy announcement?
“Baby announcement” is the broader phrase. It can mean announcing a pregnancy or introducing a baby after birth. A pregnancy announcement usually shares that you're expecting; a birth announcement shares that your baby has arrived. Choose the wording and sign to match the news you're sharing.
When should I share my announcement?
Share it when you're ready. You can tell close family privately before posting more widely, or wait until you've had time together after the birth. There is no need to choose a public announcement date just because you have ordered a plaque.
Can I use the plaque after the announcement?
Yes. Keep it with your baby's first outfit or display it safely out of reach as a nursery keepsake. If you would also like to photograph the months that follow, our wooden baby milestone discs are designed for first-year photo moments.
Where are Creative Mama's baby announcement plaques made?
We make them to order in Hull, UK. The materials, lettering, size choices and personalisation details are listed on each product page, so you can check the particular design before ordering.
